Adult Services Manager

Provides direct supervision for Adult Services Assistants and Adult Services Associates. Provides limited supervision for the Outreach Associate.
Exempt. Full-Time



The Adult Services Manager is responsible for the overall administration of services for adult members. The Adult Services Manager works under minimal supervision with a very high degree of independent judgment and action.
The Adult Services Manager responsibilities include the development, implementation, and management of programming, materials selection, and the day-to-day function of the department. The Adult Services Manager serves as a member of the library's administration team and assists the Director with planning, policy development and other tasks as required.


Per KRS 171.230-300, all full-time employees who provide information services to the public must be certified. Full-time employees in this job classification are subject to this requirement and must achieve a minimum certification level of Paraprofessional II. Newly hired or current employees in this classification who do not qualify for this minimum level are required to obtain temporary certification and will then have five years to obtain full certification in order to continue employment.



1. Plans, directs, and conducts adult programming in the library and throughout the community.
2. Develops a diverse collection of materials for adults including the selection, deselection (weeding), categorization, and over all organization of materials in a variety of formats
3. Prepares bibliographies, brochures and displays of adult materials.
4. Provide reference and reader’s advisory service to members
5. Prepare and administer computer instruction for members and staff
6. Participate in outreach activities and networking with local agencies
7. Administers the department’s budgets for materials, supplies and programming.
8. Create monthly narrative and statistical reports of the position’s activities
9. Participates in local, regional and state adult services groups
10. Keeps Library Director informed on relevant trends in adult services
11. Continually evaluates department services and programs and proposes changes or improvements as needed
12. Coordinates with library staff on the services and activities in the adult services department


1. Supervises adult personnel including determining staff needs, hiring, training, scheduling, monitoring, leading and evaluating staff, and resolving problems.
2. Participates in strategic and short-term planning for the Adult Services Department
3. Submits recommendations on library policies and services to the Library Director
4. Works with the Library Director to plan, develop, and provide high quality library services to the meet the needs of the patrons in the community
5. Oversees Makerspace and Memory Lab services
6. Oversees History Room services
7. Oversees Outreach services
8. Supervises Adult Services Assistants and Associates in preforming department duties
9. Facilitates staff training
10. Serves as site supervisor during the absence of the Library Director.


1. Participates in all tasks to accomplish efficient and accurate checking in and checking out of all types of materials
2. Registers new library users and issues library cards
3. Contacts library users about holds and maintains holds area
4. Assists members with copier, fax, and printer
5. Collects and records fines and fees
6. Assists library users in locating materials or refers them appropriately to others who can help. Handles member complaints and problems patiently and decisively
7. Performs reference and reader’s advisory services in person, by telephone and by e-mail using materials in a variety of formats
8. Assists and instructs library users in the use of public computers, library catalog, and digital library resources
9. Interprets the Library’s policies and procedures to the public in a customer friendly manner. Refers unresolved issues to the Library Director as appropriate.
10. Maintains knowledge of circulation system, library policies and procedures, library services and collection, and digital resources
11. Cleans, shelves, and shifts library materials. Checks items for damage
12. Assists in training new employees in the performance of customer support related duties as requested.
13. Assists in keeping the library neat and orderly


1. Assists with other projects and events as instructed
2. Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance and participation in local, state, regional, and/or national conferences and workshops and through programs of continuing education, professional reading and participation in professional groups


Education, Training, and Experience:

• Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school. • Knowledge of library principles and practices and the ability to put them into practice. • Must be able to meet and maintain Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) certification requirements. • Prior public service experience • Knowledge and familiarity with computers and software programs

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Verbal skills sufficient to communicate with other employees and library users • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other library staff • Ability to learn and practice library policies and procedures • General knowledge of library services and collections • Ability to operate computers, projectors, copy machines and other equipment • Basic math skills • Ability to read • Alphabetical and numerical filing skills • Ability to retrieve and return books to shelves • Ability to maintain confidentiality of library user records • Ability to work days, evenings, Saturdays and/or Sundays as assigned • Ability to attain Library Experience certification within 5 years of employment
