Teen Services Associate

Under the direction and direct supervision of the Young Adult Services Librarian, the Teen Services Associate is responsible for a variety of duties within the Young Adult Services department. This includes staffing the public service desks, a broad range of clerical and public service support duties, and teen programming for grades 6-12. The Teen Services Associate is expected to uphold library policies, procedures, and ethics.


Per KRS 171.230-300, all full-time employees who provide information services to the public must be certified. Employees in this job classification are subject to this requirement and must achieve a minimum certification level of Paraprofessional. Newly hired or current employees in this classification who do not qualify for this minimum level are required to obtain temporary certification and will then have five years to obtain full certification in order to continue employment. Part-time employees in this class may be required to complete the part-time certification requirements at the discretion of their supervising manager.


Youth Services Duties Include:

- Plans, prepares, and runs library programming for grades 6-12 with the Young Adult Services Librarian
- Assists with maintaining the order and appearance of the library, with a focus on the teen areas
- Assists with the processing and organization of materials for the teen services collection
- Assist Young Adult Services Librarian with the preparation of bibliographies and displays of teen materials
- Assists with the teen collection as directed by the Young Adult Services Librarian
- Participate in outreach activities and networking with local agencies
- Assists in training new employees in Young Adult Services department related duties

Circulation Duties Include:

- Staffs the public circulation desks
- Assists patrons with library equipment and technology
- Maintains good internal and external customer service, including referring unresolved issues to the appropriate supervisor(s)
- Assists patrons with reference and reader’s advisory requests or refers them appropriately to others who can help
- Maintains knowledge of circulation system, policies, procedures, services, collection, and digital resources
- Cleans, shelves, and shifts library materials
- Participates in shelf reading assignments and keeps collection orderly

General Duties Include:

- Assist with projects and events as instructed
- Assist with programs for college age patrons as needed
- Participates in continuing education opportunities as appropriate
- Work evenings and weekends as necessary
- Other duties as assigned


Education, Training, and Experience:

- High School Diploma or GED - Prior public service experience (preferred) - Prior experience working with teens (preferred)

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

- Ability to work well with a diverse population - Ability to determine and interpret community interests/needs and translate them into services - Ability to plan, manage, and evaluate departmental services - Strong interpersonal and communication skills, in person, by phone, and virtually - Ability to work independently and collaboratively - Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as necessary - Ability to travel as necessary for programming, professional training, meetings, and conferences

Physical Characteristics:

- Ability to function in a general office environment - Ability to shelve, shelf read, and retrieve materials from shelves
