Under the supervision of the Library Services Manager, Customer Support Assistants provide routine clerical and operational support in all departments of the library. This position performs duties of varying levels of complexity in handling library materials, providing public services in person, via phone, and online, entertaining and retrieving data from automated systems, and maintaining library collections and facilities.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT/CIRCULATION DUTIES (95%):
1. Participates in all tasks to accomplish efficient and accurate checking in and checking out of all types of materials
2. Registers new library users and issues library cards
3. Contact library users about holds and maintain the holds area
4. Assists members with copier, fax, and printer
5. Collects and records fines and fees
6. Maintains good relations with the public and other library staff; communicates effectively, courteously, and tactfully
7. Assists library users in locating materials or refers them appropriately to others who can help. Handles member complaints and problems patiently and decisively
8. Performs reference and reader’s advisory services in person, by telephone, and via email using materials in a variety of formats
9. Interprets the Library’s policies and procedures to the public in a customer-friendly manner. Refer unresolved issues to the appropriate supervisor(s).
10. Maintains knowledge of the circulation system, library policies and procedures, library services and collection, and digital resources
11. Assists and instructs library users in the use of public computers, library catalog, and digital library resources
12. Cleans, shelves, and shifts library materials. Checks items for damage
13. Participates in shelf reading assignments and keeps collection orderly
14. Checks patrons in/out of study rooms and meeting rooms. Assists patrons with reserving rooms on an as-needed basis.
15. Assists in training new employees to perform customer support-related duties as requested.
16. Assists in keeping the library neat and orderly
OTHER DUTIES (5%):
1. Assist with projects and events as instructed
2. Participate in continuing education opportunities as appropriate
3. Other duties as assigned
– Must by 18 years of age or older
– High School Diploma or GED
– 1-2 years prior customer service experience preferred
– Proficiency with the internet and common productivity software such as Microsoft Office preferred
– Ability to work well with a diverse population
– Basic knowledge of library materials, services, and operations
– Strong commitment to excellent customer service
– Knowledge of current library technology
– Strong interpersonal and communication skills in person, by phone, and online.
– Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing for internal and external audiences
– Ability to work independently and manage time and resources to achieve results
– Ability to analyze issues and to exercise good judgment to solve problems and make decisions
– Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively to achieve results.
– Ability to be adaptable and to flourish in a changing environment
– Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as necessary
– Ability to use a variety of library and office software to complete assigned tasks
– Ability to rapidly adapt to new technologies
– Alphabetical and numerical filing skills
– Ability to retrieve and return items to shelves
– Ability to maintain confidentiality of library user records
