Summer Reading

Summer reading at the Anderson Public Library will be out of this world!  Join us as we take a voyage among the stars and travel through a universe of stories with brand new programs.

The library has many new programs lined up this year for children from toddlers to grade school, all with a space and science theme.  According to Sherry Noon, youth and family services manager at the library, summer reading participants will get to enjoy a brand new additional weekly program.

Called Tinkering Tuesdays, children ages 6-12 will get to explore their science and engineering sides.  Ms Sherry will have multiple stations set up where children will get to build with craft sticks, make slime, work with Legos, and so much more.

The new program will build on STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) principles while encouraging them to have fun and work as a team. “STEM and STEAM are such powerful ways to learn,” Ms Sherry said.

During the main part of summer reading, Ms Sherry has many new performances scheduled along with old favorites.  Some of the new performances include an interactive, build your own adventure story from Cooking Caravan, and a space theme magician called Presto Paul who will dazzle the crowd with optical illusions and wacky experiments.

Silly Safaris will be returning to the library but with a new twist.  Brand new performer, called Ryan the Lion, will be showing children many out of this world animals.

“I think it’s going to be a great summer reading,” Ms Sherry said, adding that summer reading not only provides entertainment but also continues learning through the summer. “Not only are the shows fun, but everything that I try to do has an educational component to it.  I think learning should be fun.”

In addition to the main shows, families will receive a reading log each week to help encourage reading at home.  If the logs are completed, they will receive a free book at the end of summer reading.

The programs will kick off this year on Saturday, June 22nd with the Touch a Truck event.  Children at this event will get to explore various emergency vehicles, trucks, and tractors.
